Capture the Cork

Capture the Cork is the classic beer drinking game for 2 to 3 players.

The Legend

Legend has it a game similar to Capture the Cork was played often by pirates sailing the open seas. Using a cork from a rum barrel the pirates would take turns flipping a cup on top of the cork.

Goals

The goal of Capture the Cork is to flip your cup from the upright, standing position onto its top (upside down position) ending up with the cork in the cup.

Requirements

  • Plenty of beer for each player.
  • 2 plastic cups.
  • At least 1 cork. (It is recommended that you drink 1 bottle of wine for each cork used in the game. More than 1 cork can be used during play.)

Rules

  • Begin the game by placing a cup in the center of the table.
  • Each play must have a can (or bottle) of beer.
  • Each player performs the "ceremonial pour" by pouring a splash of beer into the center cup.
  • Similar to flip cup, you must flip the cup from the standing position onto its top. The cup should be flipped from the edge of the table.
  • The cup must “capture the cork” meaning that the cork must end up in the flipped cup.
  • The player who is flipping the cup is called the flipper.
  • The flipper begins by placing the cork in a standing position. The standing position means placing the cork on one of its two flat ends.
  • The flipper places the cup in the upright position on the edge of the table.
  • The flipper, using his or her less dominate hand, must flip the cup from the upright position onto its top ending up with the cork in the flipped cup.
  • The flipper can make as many attempts as needed to capture the cork.
  • Again, the flipper must flip the cup with his or her less dominate hand. In other words, if you are left handed you must flip the cup with your right hand; if you are right handed you must flip the cup with your left hand. If you are caught flipping with your dominate hand you must drink.
  • The flipper must successfully capture the cork in as many turns or less than the previous flipper.
  • If the flipper successfully captures the cork in less turns than the previous flipper, the flipper pours a splash of beer in the center cup.
  • If the flipper successfully captures the cork in the same number of turns as the previous flipper, nothing happens.
  • If the flipper cannot successfully capture the cork in the same number of turns as the previous flipper then the flipper must drink from his or her beer. For instance, if the previous flipper successfully captured the cork in 3 turns and the current flipper fails to capture the cork on the third attempt, the current flipper must drink. (Recommendation: Other players can feel free to yell “You drink” when the flipper fails to successfully capture the cork.)
  • If the flipper captures a standing cork all other players must drink.
  • If the flipper captures a standing cork on the first attempt, the flipper gives the center cup to any player at the table. Note: All players except the flipper must still drink once from his or her beer in honor of the standing cork.
  • The player with the center cup must drink all the beer in the cup before the game can resume.
  • Once the center cup is empty, the cup is returned to the table center and all players perform a ceremonial pour.
  • When the flipper successfully captures the cork, play moves to the player on the left.
  • ontinue play until all players are bored or too drunk to continue.

Tips

  • Only the flipper drinks with he or she does not successfully match or beat the number of flip attempts made by the previous flipper.
  • All players except the flipper must drink from his or her beer when a standing cork is captured.
  • The center cup drinker must finish the cup before the game can resume.
